Renowned for his talent and ability to bring to life the energy of South African music, trumpeter Hugh Masekela has collaborated with numerous artists internationally and also co-created the Broadway smash musical, Sarafina.

Freshlyground is the musical voice of a nation’s adolescent democracy. The diverse backgrounds of seven members from the different ethnicities of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe means they weave musical magic that is highly infectious and undeniably groovy. With four celebrated albums, an MTV Award and a collaboration with Shakira in the 2010 World Cup song, “Waka Waka- This Time For Africa,” Freshlyground has established their place on the international music map.

Often compared to famed chanteuses Sarah Vaughan and Miriam Makeba, Ugandan vocalist Somi blends African & jazz inspired rhythms into a unique global sound. Singing in English and three east African languages, Somi’s vocal delivery is subtle, yet the power she exerts is enormous.

Get a head start on celebrating the Chinese New Year with a foodie trip to New York City’s Chinatown, one of the stops on our monthly day trip to the Big Apple!

You can pack drinks and a cooler of snacks for the ride on Jan. 30 on our comfortable bus, but save your appetite for the culinary adventure ahead.

Not sure where to start? Critically renowned Chef David Chang of Momofoku fame recently told The Observer magazine in the UK that “I’ve had more meals at Oriental Garden in Chinatown [in New York] than anywhere else.”

For more ideas, SF Weekly offered a trail that blogger Alex Hochman called the Danny Bowien Chinatown tour. Bowien, who owns Mission Chinese Food in the City by the Bay, sent the blogger to some of his favorite stops:

Xi’an Famous Foods: cumin lamb hand-pulled noodles, stewed pork burger

Prosperity Dumpling: dumplings , sesame pancake with beef

Golden Steamer: pork buns, steamed pumpkin bun, takeout six-packs of ready-to-heat buns

If you’d like to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit in the Big Apple with family and friends, you can also reserve a limousine, minibus or bus to take you so that you don’t have to worry about driving or finding a place to park.

Atlantic City: Saturday, March 13th

Come with us to Atlantic City! We’ll get you there and back in a safe, comfortable minibus. All you need to do is bring your wallet and a little luck. We will drop you right at the Tropicana Casino and Resort and hand you $15 for the casino. If gambling is not your scene, check out one of the various restaurants – from Chinese to Mexican to upscale American, you’ll find something to wet your taste buds. As our guest, you are welcome to bring a thermos, smaller cooler or a few snacks for the ride. If you want a taste of the luck of the Irish, RiRa Irish Pub in The Quarter will feature a line up of entertainment from noon to 2 a.m.

Charlottesville: Saturday, March 20th

And of course, our perennial favorite — New York City day trip on Sunday, March 28th
It’s not too late to celebrate the lunar new year, and you can join the Big Apple’s celebration via Asia Week, the first-ever coordinated effort between New York City galleries, museums, art dealers and auction houses to devote a week to awareness and discussion of Asian art, the Asia Society-sponsored Asia Week will feature special events and exhibitions taking place at a variety of locations around the City. On March 28th, take in a guided tour and lecture at the Museum of Chinese in America. For more information on Asia Week, visit www.asiaweeknewyork.org.The bus also makes stops at Central Park and Times Square, so you’ll have a host of other opportunities to celebrate spring in the City!

It’s the perfect mini-vacation: Catch our bus in McLean and ride in air-conditioned comfort all the way to the Big Apple. You’ll arrive just in time for lunch at one of the best foodie areas in the city, where more than 200 restaurants offer an array of dining experiences.

Not sure where to start? If you’re already there, the best place to begin would be the information kiosk on Canal at the intersection of Walker and Baxter. Open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Daily, the kiosk provides free maps, guides and brochures to help you explore Chinatown.
