Viewing the blooming of the cherry blossoms along the tidal basin is one of Washington DC’s oldest springtime traditions, stemming from the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the mayor of Tokyo to the nation’s capital. The celebration has grown into a full-fledged festival, which will be celebrated March 20 to April 13 this year.
Among the events scheduled for the National Cherry Blossom Festival are:
- Pink Tie Party March 20 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
- Opening Ceremony March 22 at the Warner Theatre
- Grand Sake Tasting April 3 at the Carnegie Library
- National Cherry Blossome Parade April 12
Want to view the cherry blossoms without the hassle of fighting traffic and finding parking? Reston Limousine has day trips planned right before and during the peak bloom time of April 8-12.
For another view of the floral display, take a Potomac Riverboat Co. “View the National Cherry Blossoms by Water Tours” from March 22-April 13. Guests can catch the boat at Georgetown’s Washington Harbour on weekdays and Alexandria City Marina, Georgetown’s Washington Harbour, Gaylord National Hotel or National Harbor on weekends.
