Eleven years ago today, terrorists attacked this country in a series of events that left nearly 3,000 Americans dead.
Today there are several events in and around Washington, DC to commemorate the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. There also are memorial events in Pennsylvania and New York.
The Pentagon Memorial

National 9/11 Memorial in New York City
The ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center site in New York City will open this morning with bagpipers and drummers. Four moments of silence will be observed to mark the exact times when the planes hit each tower, and each tower fell. For a link to a live webcast of the event, go here.
Close to home, a remembrance ceremony will be held in Leesburg today at 6:30 p.m. on the Town Green at 25 W. Market Street.
