4th of July celebrations abound

Looking to add some spark to your life? The upcoming midweek holiday will offer an array of events and venues where you can catch the 4th of July festivities and fireworks.

The biggest and splashiest display will be at the National Mall, where Independence Day activities run all day long. Musical performers include Matthew Broderick and Kool & the Gang. Festivities culminate in a fireworks display at 9:10 p.m. for about 20 minutes.

Closer to home, you can celebrate with pony and wagon rides, a pie eating contest, nature exhibits and more at the Claude Moore Park in Sterling. You can also check out the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum nearby.

If you want to ignite your own sparks, opt for a romantic view of the fireworks, served with local wine and foods “associated with love” at Morven Park in Leesburg. Reservations required.

The 22nd annual Leesburg Independence Day celebration starts at 10 am with a parade. There will be two concerts and fireworks at Ida Lee Park.

Great Meadow in The Plains will have activities for family, including petting zoo, face painting, pony races, helicopter display, polo matches and fireworks.

Lake Fairfax Park in Reston has a full day’s lineup of fun. The swimming hole will be open for most of the day, and vendors will have food and snacks. Old fashioned field games will keep families busy, as will the pony rides, puppet show, carousel and petting zoo.
