Doukenie Winery

George and Nicki Bazaco, the vineyard founders, purchased 300 acres of Virginia farmland in 1983 and later named the land after George’ grandmother, Doukenie. Doukenie means “duchess” in Greek and Greek culture is an important part of the family heritage.

The first vineyard was planted in 1985 to produce Cabernet Sauvignon. Additional vines were planted in 1989, 1993, and throughout the following decade. The winery was constructed in 2006 and most recently, 200 acres were purchased in 2007.

Doukenie’s wines have been earning praise and medals since the early 2000s.

In 2013, The Official Virginia Wine Lovers awarded Doukenie’s tasting room the “Visitors Choice Award”. To date, the vineyard has more than 70 awards and continues to receive accolades for its legendary grapes.

Doukenie is conveniently located just an hour’s drive from Washington, DC and welcomes those who are looking for a brief respite from the city. The rolling fields, blue-gray mountains, and bright sky make for an appealing backdrop to sip fine wine and bask in the fresh air.

Visitors are more than welcome to attend tastings year-round from 10 am to 6 pm and there are special events offered frequently onsite. More information about upcoming events and winery news can be found on the company website.

About the Winemaker

Sebastien Marquet, Doukenie’s chief winemaker, decided he wanted to be a winemaker as early as his 12th birthday. His mind was made up.

In 1989, he produced his very first batch of wine. Sebastien grew up in France and spent several years making wine in Burgundy before moving on to manage vineyards in Languedoc-Roussillon. His varied experiences allowed him to develop greater knowledge of the different varietals and hone his winemaking technique.

Upon leaving Europe, Sebastien launched a tropical Caribbean vineyard in 1996, worked in Sonoma and Napa Valley in California, and eventually settled down in rural Virginia where he produces the fine wines at Doukenie.

Ultimately, his goal is to create wines that are not only delicious, but consistently measure up, vintage after vintage.
