About the Winery

Barrel Oak Winery has been in operation since 2008. Owners Brian and Sharon wanted to create a retreat from the hectic world, wean people off their “crackberries”, and offer a respite from urban life. Today, their vineyard does just that. With picturesque views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and rolling acres of grape vines and farmland, Barrel Oak is a rustic countryside escape.

Beyond the sense of community Brian and Sharon have created, they also produce epic quantities of wine. Each year Barrel Oak makes more than 24,000 gallons of wine on the 26-acre property.  Currently, there are 12 varietals on the property. They include:  Traminette, Vidal Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Chambourcin, Petit Manseng, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Chardonnay and Viognier. There are several more vines that have been recently planted and should bear fruit for new wines in the coming year.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their dogs along for a day of wine tasting and picnicking, though pets must kept on a leash.  Barrel Oak Winery has been named “Virginia’s Favorite Winery” in the Washington Post Express, Northern Virginia Magazine, and Virginia Living Magazine for the past two years. Additionally, the vineyard has racked up many more accolades since opening, including “Most Family Friendly Winery in the World by The Wine Enthusiast in 2012.

Sharon Roeder is the heart and soul of Barrel Oak Winery. A former Georgetown student and Fulbright scholar, she gave up the city life to fulfill her dream of growing grapes and producing delicious wine. In the past several years, her wines have garnered international awards and national recognition. One of her crowning achievements is winning “Best in Show” for the 2008 production of her Reserve Petit Verdot at the State fair of Virginia.
