About the Winery
Notaviva is one of the most unique and exquisite wineries in Virginia wine country. Created on the premise that wine and music go hand in hand, founders Stephen and Shannon Mackey pair each wine with a musical genre or lyrical inspiration. The vineyard was built on the belief that music, wine, and good company are all an important part of a happy community. While the founders originally started the brand as a website educating others about music, they founded the vineyard to capture the feeling of connection and infuse their wines with it.
Notaviva was conceived in 2002 and has been a unique addition to the Purcellville, VA vineyard scene. Visitors are welcome to taste the wines, listen to music, and linger for hours. There are no rigid tasting schedules but rather guests are allowed to sip and relax and enjoy the views.
The tasting line up varies but typically includes a mix of reds and whites regardless of the season. Since 2009, Notaviva wines have received national praise and accolades. Most recently, the 2012 “Sabado” Sauvignon Blanc won the silver medal at the 2013 Indianapolis International Wine Competition.
Stephen and Shannon Mackey met in 1993 in Miami, FL. It was their love of music that brought them together. Both have backgrounds in the music industry and Shannon went on to forge a career in emerging media. She worked for companies like Discovery Communications and AOL.
Several years after their paths first crossed, they were reunited and fell in love. They married in 2004 at Notaviva Vineyards and asked guests to help their dream grow. The couple created an order form where wedding guests could purchase vines for the vineyard and nearly half an acre of vines were bought with these gifts.
