Submit Comments on Transportation Improvements

Reston Limousine CEO Kristina Bouweiri would like to share the following letter, which was sent to Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce members requesting them to submit comments to the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board.

Your help is needed to improve I-66 inside the beltway.

The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) is seeking public comment on its FY 2013-FY 2018 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), which includes westbound I-66 Spot Improvement #2 (a third lane between the Sycamore Street/Washington Blvd. exit and the Dulles Connector Road.

The public comment deadline is this Saturday, July 14. The TPB will vote on July 18.

Projects must be listed in the TIP to be eligible for federal funding.

Several years ago, in one of its more disgraceful acts, the TPB voted to remove Spot Improvement #2 (and #3) from the TIP until VDOT completed an I-66 Inside the Beltway Multi-Modal Study, which was unrelated to either spot improvement. The TPB’s action made the spot improvements ineligible for federal stimulus dollars.

The multi-modal study is now complete. With TPB approval, construction on Spot Improvement #2 can begin as early as the spring of 2013 and be open to traffic in the fall.

Spot improvement #1 (3rd lane between Fairfax Drive/Ballston and Sycamore Street opened last December and is making a tremendous difference. VDOT has funding for Spot Improvement #2 and we need to keep the momentum going.

Opposition to reinstating Spot Improvement #2 is anticipated from the usual obstructionist groups and it is important that the public record reflect broad public support.

To facilitate such support I have attached a sample letter and forms that can be used to print supportive postcards.

Comments can be submitted electronically through the following ( ). However, organizations are encouraged to mail or fax (202-962-3201) their comments because hard copies are circulated to TPB members in advance of the meeting, and emails are not.

Again, the public comment deadline is July 14. I hope you will make registering your support for I-66 Spot Improvement #2 a priority.

Thank you for your support!
